Erasmus+ in Action: Discovering Macerata and Beyond

RSG Enkhuizen

Our Erasmus+ journey in Macerata has officially begun, marking the second phase of an enriching international collaboration for our two DLE classes (mavo and havo 3). With a strong commitment to inclusion, we choose to involve full class groups in every exchange, ensuring that every pupil benefits from this unique educational experience.

This project builds on the foundations laid earlier in the academic year when our Italian partners from Bramante, Pannaggi & Garibaldi visited us in September and October. During their time with us, they explored key themes such as water management, sustainability, digital education and world citizenship. A particular highlight was sharing our expertise in living with water, including our innovative dike systems and the ongoing challenge of keeping our feet dry in the Netherlands.

Now it is our turn to learn. Here in the Marche region, the focus shifts to understanding the ‘shakes’ – the earthquakes, which from time to time ‘shake’ the region. These powerful natural forces shape both the landscape and the lives of the people who live here and are approached with respect and awareness.

Sunday was our travel day and it proved to be a long but rewarding journey. After twelve hours of travelling, we were welcomed by the fresh air and charm of the historic centre of Macerata. The first glimpse of our surroundings made the journey worthwhile and set the tone for the days ahead.

Monday marked our first full day and began with a pleasant walk to school, which was very different to our ususal ‘flat’ experience in The Netherlands with inclines and descents at between 50 and 65%. Like most Italian cities, Roman ruins sit side by side with everyday life, offering a striking sense of continuity between past and present. The morning focused on getting to know one another, exploring the Italian school system and learning about the rich history of the region, from its cultural heritage to its stunning Adriatic coastline.

In the afternoon, students worked collaboratively in international groups during a lively scavenger hunt across the city. Through a series of creative challenges, they discovered more about Macerata while strengthening communication and teamwork skills. It was a fantastic way to engage with the local environment and each other.

After a full and energising day, we returned to the hotel to enjoy a three-course Italian dinner. The experience can only be described as: wow, wow and WOW! It was the perfect ending to a memorable first day.

Erasmus+ offers far more than travel. It provides pupils with the opportunity to develop independence, intercultural understanding and confidence in communicating in English with one another. By working on shared themes such as sustainability, digital innovation and global citizenship, students gain valuable perspectives that extend far beyond the classroom. Experiences like this help shape open-minded, resilient young people who are better prepared for an interconnected world.

We are looking forward to the days ahead as we continue to learn, collaborate and grow together in this inspiring setting.
