Day 3 of the Erasmus+ Respect 4 Diversity Project: A Day in Lorient
Day three of the Erasmus+ Respect 4 Diversity project was an unforgettable experience for our students as they embarked on a day trip to Lorient, Brittany. Leaving behind our base in Quimper, we set out early in the morning to explore the rich history, cutting-edge technology and ecological focus of Lorient’s Cité de la Voile and its surrounding sites.
Our first stop was the renowned Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly, a museum dedicated to sailing and maritime innovation. Students were immediately drawn into the museum’s dual focus on ecology and technology. Through interactive exhibits, they learned about the environmental challenges facing our oceans, such as pollution and the impact of climate change and explored sustainable solutions for preserving marine ecosystems.
A highlight of the visit was the hands-on sailing simulators, where students could try their hand at navigating a virtual boat. These cutting-edge simulators provided a dynamic, practical learning experience that aligned perfectly with the Erasmus+ priority of integrating technology into education. By engaging with these tools, pupils not only honed their problem-solving and decision-making skills but also gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity of sailing and the importance of hand-eye coordination.
Next, the group visited the submarine located on-site at Lorient’s former WWII submarine base. This part of the day offered a unique, immersive experience that brought history to life. Equipped with language-specific headsets, students explored the tight, confined quarters of the submarine, gaining insight into the lives of submariners during World War II.
The visit also highlighted Lorient’s strategic importance during the war as a hub for German U-boat operations. Pupils were captivated by the stories of resilience and innovation shared through the interactive displays, adding depth to their understanding of European history—a key focus of Erasmus+ projects promoting cultural awareness and global citizenship.
After an enriching morning, the group enjoyed some free time in Quimper, wandering through its bustling streets and browsing for souvenirs.
The day’s culinary highlight came in the form of a delicious three-course meal at the prestigious Lycée Le Paraclet to top off their day.
The day concluded with some friendly sports competitions. Pupils joined resident students at the lycée for an energetic game of basketball outdoors, followed by an indoor football match. These activities underscored the importance of collaboration, physical activity, and building friendships across cultures—essential elements of the Erasmus+ programmes emphasis on personal development and inclusivity.
