Erasmus+ Exchange in Enkhuizen – Day 2: Scavenger Hunts, Science and Dutch Fayre

RSG Enkhuizen

The second day of our Erasmus+ Water & Shakes exchange was packed with discovery, challenges and cultural experiences.

Morning: A Hunt Through Enkhuizen

The day began with a lively Scavenger Hunt through Enkhuizen. Pupils worked in groups to track down and photograph all sorts of typically Dutch items scattered throughout the town. From ‘roze koek’ to windmills and from the old prison to the Dromedaris, the hunt was a fun way to explore the town while competing in teams.

The learning continued outside at the train station, where pupils took part in an open-air geography lesson. They studied the Dutch water system and carried out a risk assessment of Enkhuizen—investigating which areas would be most vulnerable if the dike were to breach. An eye-opening way to see their surroundings from a new perspective.

Afternoon: Learning by Doing

Back at school, the afternoon offered a range of hands-on activities:

  • Dodgeball Climate Change – a fast-paced game that made pupils think about the winners and losers in a changing climate.
  • Social Media Workshop – where pupils created their own message for a possible social media message.
  • Science Experiment – purifying ditch water into safe drinking water, turning theory into practice right before their eyes.

Evening: A Taste of the Netherlands

The Italian pupils were then welcomed into the homes of our Dutch families for a traditional dinner. From sweet pancakes to hearty zuurkool and even snert (the famous Dutch pea soup), everyone enjoyed sampling some of the country’s favourite dishes.

The evening was full of laughter, stories, and new friendships. A huge thank you to all the parents who opened their homes and made space at the table for an extra coupld of guests—or more in some cases!
