First Full Day in England Full of Energy, History and Very British Weather

RSG Enkhuizen

After a long journey yesterday through Belgium and France, including some delays during the Channel crossing, our first-year DLE pupils finally began their first full day in England today. Despite the travel fatigue, nothing could dampen their enthusiasm as they set off for an exciting programme packed with culture, history and language experiences.

The morning’s activities took place in the historic town of Battle, famous as the site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Here, the pupils enjoyed a lively cricket workshop, where they were introduced to one of England’s most traditional sports. For many, it was their very first time holding a cricket bat, but the pupils embraced the challenge with great energy and humour.

The group also attended an engaging historical talk about the famous battle that changed the course of English history. Standing in the very town, where these events unfolded nearly a thousand years ago, made the experience especially memorable and helped bring history to life for them.

England, however, was also determined to provide a truly authentic welcome. The weather certainly did not disappoint; it was raining cats and dogs, the skies were as grey as can be and umbrellas quickly became the accessory of the day: a truly British experience indeed, grumbling about the weather!

With more outdoor activities planned at Battle Abbey for the afternoon, the programme was quickly adapted. Rather than getting completely soaked to the skin, the group headed indoors for another memorable experience.

Quick thinking had the group trave to Dartford for an English listening activity combined with a cinema visit. The pupils watched Michael, the film about the life of Michael Jackson. The afternoon became even more enjoyable thanks to the cinema’s luxurious reclining seats, which were met with great enthusiasm by everyone in the group. We suspect many pupils will now expect the same level of comfort the next time they visit a cinema back home!

After a busy and enjoyable day, the pupils, tired but full of stories and first impressions of life in the UK, will be getting prepared for lots of walking on Wednesday. Tomorrow promises another exciting adventure as the group heads to the capital city to explore the sights and sounds of London. Let’s just hope that the weather plays ball!
