M2tto visits Van der Valk, Hoorn

RSG Enkhuizen

Our mavo 2 pupils are learning all about hospitality in the BTEC lessons and what a better way to learn about customer service with a smile than at the tallest hotel in our area, Van der Valk Hoorn.

Events Manager, Ms. Van den Burg welcomed the group and escorted them on a guided tour around the hotel from the sports area, to the swimming pool on the top floor and to see the rooms and suites…what a view some of these rooms have looking out at the city of Hoorn and the IJsselmeer.

It was then time to get some work done and the pupils were given the opportunity to learn how to walk carrying a tray of glasses. Working in the restaurant, the pupils learnt how to set the table for guests…now, was it the fork on the left hand side and the knife on the right facing inwards? How did that work again with cutlery for starters and bread knives? Our pupils will be able to tell you after their experience there!

After their practice, they were offered some food from the extensive lunch buffet! Enthusiastic about what they have seen, well fed and full of new ideas about hospitality, the pupils were sad to be leaving Hoorn to return to Enkhuizen. Our thanks to Ms. Van den Burg and her team at Van der Valk Hotel and Restaurant, Hoorn for a very interesting and educational visit!
