M3 DLE experiences hospitality at top hotels in Amsterdam

How do you set a table with cutlery, wine and water glasses? That was one of the tasks that the DLE 3 pupils from our mavo department had to work out whilst visiting the NH hotel Amsterdam Zuid, where we spent the morning learning about the ‘on the job’ MBO 4 course offered at this location, which whisks the students through back office, front desk and service to name but a few. Rooms and a suite were shown by two students from the course and questions were asked along the way about their experience so far and our pupils had to guess the rate applicable for the rooms and understand how supply and demand works which increases and reduces the rates.

Our afternoon started with a leisurely lunch at the Doubletree by Hilton, who also offer the ‘on the job’ course. The General Manager, Mr. Floris Licht came specially to talk to the pupils and explain all that the Hilton group does in the sustainability arena and what the Doubletree hotels in The Netherlands exclusively do, planting trees when guests choose to have their rooms cleaned less during longer stays. Over 2700 trees have already been planted thanks to this initiative…so slightly more than a ‘double tree!’

Our pupils were tasked with creating ‘insta-friendly’ photos for the new hip coffee bar, Lot 61, during their tour of the premises and many were taken in the exclusive LuminAir lounge with views over the Amsterdam skyline and IJ, which today played host to two cruise boats that towered higher than some of the buildings! Congratulations to the three winners, Dariana, Jara and Lily, whose work was judged by the marketing team from the hotel.

Our DLE pupils are now armed with a few more ideas about what avenues are available to them after leaving the RSG in the future… luckily, they still have plenty of time to make that decision!
